This volume is an indexed manuscript inventory of abstracts of the despatches comprising sub-series IOR/L/PS/5/259-277, ‘Secret Letters and Enclosures from India’ 1866-1874, volumes 1-19.
The geographical coverage of this volume (and of series IOR/L/PS/5/259-277) is chiefly: Afghanistan; Central Asia; Persia [Iran]; Muscat; Khoten (Kashgar); Hyderabad; Carnatic Family; Mysore [Mysuru]; Khelat [Kalat]; Persian Gulf; Burmah [Myanmar, formerly Burma]; Mekran [Makran]; Zanzibar; Aden; Somali Coast; Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq]; Nejd [Najd]; Ladakh; Indore; China; Bokhara [Bukhara]; Yemen; Cashmere [Kashmir]; Seistan [Sistan]; Political Agencies; Yarkand [Yarkant]; Hadhramant [Hadhramaut]; Nepaul [Nepal]; Siam [Thailand]; North East Frontier [Union Territory of India]; Bahrein [Bahrain]; and Yunnan.
The volume consists of two sections, as follows:
Folios 1-96: A manuscript alphabetical index of personal and place names. Each place name includes a detailed sub-index of general and specific matters or events. The numbers adjacent to each entry refer to the (contemporary) printed page numbers on which the abstract appears within this volume.
Folios 96-203: A manuscript inventory, in chronological order, of abstracts of the documents comprising the sub-series IOR/L/PS/5/259-277. The information is arranged in four columns:
1) The Political or Secret Department Despatch number
2) The day, month and year of the despatch
3) The ‘Letters from India’ abstract, titled by the name of the place or country, followed by a summary of the contents of the despatch
4) The volume number (I-XIX) and the page numbers (the original manuscript pagination) covered by the Secret or Political Department Despatch
Note: Folios 204 to 228 are blank (216-266 of the original printed pagination).
