Title:

Enclosures to Secret Letters from Bombay, Vol 144

Scope & Content:

Inscribed: 'Secret Dept. Bombay Enclosures. January to June 1861.' (folio 5).

The volume contains enclosures to dispatches from the Secret Department of HM's Government of Bombay, Bombay Castle, to the India Office. The dispatches are dated 12 January to 27 June 1861, and are numbered 1-23. There is no dispatch no. 13 present in the volume. The enclosures contain correspondence dated 1860-61.

The enclosures relate to Abyssinia, Aden, Turkish Arabia, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, and Zanzibar.

Important topics include: the slave trade; the military operations of Emperor Tewodros II against rebels in Abyssinia; reports on the conduct of Ottoman governors at Baghdad; French influence at Zanzibar; and enquiries into the alleged murder of the former French Consular Agent at Aden, Henri Lambert.
