‘FOREIGN LETTERS FROM INDIA Jan 1873’

Scope & Content:

This volume contains copies of Political, Finance, Revenue, Revenue - Irrigation, and General Despatches from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dating from January 1873.

The Despatches usually consist of a covering letter followed by enclosures (mostly copies of correspondence). Some of the Despatches include an abstract of contents after the covering letter, and there is more than one copy of most of the Despatches. The Despatches are numbered and dated, and are usually also stamped with the date they were received by the India Office Political and/or Secret Department.

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 670a; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.

The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading and ending flyleaves.

The sequence contains four foliation omission anomalies, missing out ff 127, 128, 129, and 477. There are 126 foliation insertion anomalies.
