Scope & Content:

This volume contains copies of Political, General and Finance Despatches from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dating from February 1874.

The Despatches usually consist of a covering letter followed by enclosures (mostly copies of correspondence). Some of the Despatches include an abstract of contents after the covering letter, and there is more than one copy of some of the Despatches.

The Despatches are numbered and dated, and are usually also stamped with the date they were received.

Foliation: this file consists of two physical volumes in one slipcase. The foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio of volume one (ff 1-216) and terminates at the last folio of volume two (ff 217-437); these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the two leading and two ending flyleaves of each volume. The sequence contains one foliation anomaly, f 1a.

Part 2 comprises folios numbered 217-437

Political Despatches are arranged numerically by Despatch number (and chronologically) from the front of the first volume to the rear of the second volume, with a few other types of Despatch - General and Finance - interspersed throughout the volumes.
