Title:

‘Foreign Letters from India May & June 1874.’

Scope & Content:

This volume contains copies of despatches from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dating from May and June 1874. The despatches are mainly Political despatches, but there are also some General, Finance, and Revenue despatches. The volume also includes a copy of a Public despatch from the Government of India Home Department to the Secretary of State for India, dated 1 May 1873 (received 26 May 1873) (IOR/L/PS/6/118, ff 10-12a).

The despatches usually consist of a covering letter followed by enclosures (mostly copies of correspondence). Some of the despatches include an abstract of contents after the covering letter, and there is more than one copy of most of the despatches. The despatches are numbered and dated, and are usually also stamped with the date they were received.

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 409a; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio.

The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading and ending flyleaves.

The sequence contains one foliation omission anomaly, missing out f 208. There are 155 foliation insertion anomalies (e.g. 1a, 4a etc.).
