‘Foreign Letters from India August 1874’

Scope & Content:

This volume contains copies of Political, General, Revenue, and Finance Despatches from the Government of India Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dating from August 1874.

The Despatches usually consist of a covering letter followed by enclosures (mostly copies of correspondence). Some of the Despatches include an abstract of contents after the covering letter, and there is more than one copy of most of the Despatches. The Despatches are numbered and dated, and are usually also stamped with the date they were received.

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the first folio with 1 and terminates at the last folio with 474a; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. The foliation sequence does not include the front and back covers, nor does it include the leading and ending flyleaves. The sequence contains 99 foliation insertion anomalies (e.g. 1a, 4a etc.).

There is one copy each of a Military, General, Revenue, and Finance Despatch at the front of the volume, followed by groups of Political Despatches interspersed with General Despatches. The Despatches are mostly arranged numerically by Despatch number (and chronologically) within each group of Despatches, and most of the Despatches are in chronological order from the front to the rear of the volume.
