Scope & Content:

This volume contains copies of Political, Secret, Secret and Separate, General, Finance, Judicial, and Public Letters from the Government of India’s Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, dating from January 1875, usually followed by enclosures. The enclosures mostly consist of copies of correspondence, and the items sometimes include abstracts of contents. The date the Letters were received by the India Office and answered is usually recorded.

Foliation: this file consists of four physical volumes. The foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover of volume one (ff 1-176), through volume two (ff 177-368), volume three (ff 369-548), and terminates at the inside back cover of volume four (ff 549-717); these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. Additional foliation and pagination sequences are also present, but these numbers are not circled.

There is an alphabetical index of names of people, places, and subjects on folios 4-74 of the first volume. The page numbers given refer to an original pagination sequence.

The Political Despatches are mostly arranged numerically by Despatch number (and chronologically) from the front to the rear of the volume, with a few other types of Despatch (Finance, General, and Revenue) interspersed throughout the volume.
