This volume contains copies of Political and Secret Letters, from the Government of India’s Foreign Department to the Secretary of State for India, mostly dating from January to March 1883, and including Political Letters Numbers 1 to 26 and Secret Letters Numbers 1 to 44. An index is present at folios 1 to 142.
The Despatches usually consist of a cover letter followed by enclosures (primarily copies of correspondence). Some of the Despatches include an abstract of contents after the cover letter, and there is more than one copy of most of the Despatches. An India Office minute paper precedes some Despatches.
The Despatches are numbered and dated and usually stamped with the date they were received.
The volume includes:
- pp. 231-234, No 13. Application from Sayyid Abdul Malik Tura of Bukhara for permission to return to Bukhara territory. 16 January 1883
- pp. 847-870, No 76. Petition from Abdulla Khan of Bukhara, preferring a claim for the payment of a sum of 3,000 Bukhara tillas alleged to have been lent by his father, the late Naib Abdul Samad Khan, to Captain Arthur Conolly, when on a special mission to Khiva and Kokand, in 1841. Enclosed: Dr Josef Wolff’s letter dated Teheran 24 October 1844. 21 May 1883.
