‘LETTERS FROM PERSIAN GULF WITH INDEX OCT-DEC 1871’, Vol 19
- Scope & Content:
- This volume contains secret letters about the countries surrounding the Persian Gulf from 16 September to 16 December 1871. The correspondence is primarily between the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf (Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly) and the following: the Political Department of the Government of India; the Secretary of State for India; the Political Agent at Muskat [Muscat]; the Shaikh of Bahrain; the Sultan of Muskat; and the Imam of Nujd [Najd]. It includes material relating to the following matters:
- The alliance between Ebrahim ben Sultan [Ibrāhīm bin Sulṭān al-Qāsimī], the Chief of Ejman [Shaikh of Ajman, Rāshid II bin Ḥumayd al-Nu‘aymī] and the Bedouins of Banu Kuttub [Banī Kitab] and Gheflah [?] to capture Shargah [Sharjah], and that of Sheikh Salem ben Sultan [Shaikh Salīm bin Sulṭān al-Qāsimī] and the shaikhs of Amulgovain [Umm al-Qaywayn] and Ras-ul-Khymah [Ra’s al-Khaymah] to defend it against Ebrahim ben Sultan
- The handover of the port of Khaboorah [Khaburah] by the Governor, Mahommed bin Nasir [Muḥammad bin Nāṣir] to representatives of the Sultan of Muskat, Syud Toorkee [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd], and the assurances given by Mahommed bin Alli, the Naeem Chief of Bereymee [Muḥammad bin ‘Alī, the Nu‘aymī Shaikh of Buraymi] to the Sultan
- The arrival of letters and presents from Zaeed ben Khaleefah of Aboothabee [Zāyid bin Khalīfah Āl Nahyān of Abu Dhabi] at Muskat, and letters from Saoud bin Faysal [Imām Sa‘ūd bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd] calling for assistance against the Turks
- The deployment of Turkish reinforcements to Kateef [Al Qatif], the intention of the Pasha of Baghdad [Aḥmad Şefik, Midhat Pāshā] to visit, and that of Imam Saoud bin Faysal and the tribes of Nujd to fight the Turks
- A letter from the ‘Chief of Bahrain’, Shaikh Esaw ben Alli [‘Īsā bin ‘Alī Āl Khalīfah], to the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis Pelly, seeking instructions ahead of the arrival of the Pasha of Baghdad
- The declaration of Saoud bin Faysal to the Ruler of Bahrain that ‘his Moslems [Muslims] are strong and ready for jehad [jihad]’ against the Turks, and communications between him and Arabs based in the Turkish forts at Lahsah [al-Ahsa]
- The offer made by Sheikh Esaw of Bahrain to his brother Ahmed [Shaikh Aḥmad bin ‘Alī Āl Khalīfah] of half of the island to settle their differences, and the acceptance of the offer by the latter
- The desire of the Sultan of Muscat to re-lease ‘the Bunder Abbass [Bandar-e Abbas] Districts’, provided that the lease could be obtained ‘without extravagant outlay at the Court of Persia’, and that the negotiations should be entirely ‘in the hands of Colonel [Lewis] Pelly or an officer of similar rank – the Muskat envoy being merely present for form’s sake’
- The renewal of hostilities between the Sultan of Muskat and Seyyid Ibrahim bin Gheis [Sayyid Ibrāhīm bin Qays Āl Bū Sa‘īd], Governor of Sohar [Suhar] and the latter’s move with his followers to Hazam [al-Hazm]
- The clandestine correspondence of Abdul Azeez [Sayyid ‘Abd al-Azīz bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd], brother of Sultan Toorkee of Muskat, with his allies in Sharkieh [Sharqiyah] and other places in Oman
- The dissatisfaction of Deen Mahomed Khan [Dīn Muḥammad Khān Dashtyārī] and the people of Chahbar [Chabahar] with Abdul Azeez, and the dispatch of Raushed ben Humaid al Hammedee [Rāshid bin Ḥumayd al-Ḥammādī?] as the new Wali or Governor
- The escape of Abdallah bin Faysal [‘Abdullāh bin Fayṣal Āl Sa‘ūd] to Riadh [Riyadh], his accusation against the Turks of attempting to ‘supplant his Dynasty’, and the arrival of the Pasha of Baghdad in Lahsah on his way to Kateef and Bahrain
- The attack on Captain Wyndham of the Royal Artillery outside Shiraz
- The apparent request of the ‘Chief of Guttur’ [Shaikh of Qatar, Shaikh Muḥammad bin Thānī Al Thānī] to the Pasha of Baghdad for Turkish military assistance to expel Saoud bin Faysal from his territories.
