- Title:
- File 2835/1918 'Persia: East Persia (Seistan and Khorasan) Levy Corps'
- Scope & Content:
- The volume contains correspondence and other papers regarding the Sistan Levy Corps [also written as Seistan Levy Corps in the file] and the Khorasan Levy Corps, British military units in East Persia [Iran] formed from local recruits during the First World War. Topics discussed include: issues arising from the shared responsibility over parts of the Sistan Levy Corps raised and/or serving in Khorasan between HM Consul, Sistan and Kain [Qaen], and HM Consul General, Khorasan; the formation of the Khorasan Levy Corps in 1918, and discussions over whether it should be a sub-unit of the Sistan Levy Corps or a separate entity; and the gradual disbandment or transfer to Persian control of the levies during the withdrawal of British and Indian troops from Persia after the end of the war. Folios 47-52 consist of a history of the Sistan Levy Corps. The bulk of the volume dates from between March 1918 and June 1921, but folios 2-22 consist of correspondence dating from March-November 1925 relating to the awarding of medals to former members of the Sistan Levy Corps, and objections to the practice from the Government of Persia. The primary correspondents are: HM Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Persia; the Prime Minister of Persia; the Persian Minister of Foreign Affairs; the Foreign Office; the India Office; the War Office; the Government of India; HM Consul General, Khorasan; HM Consul, Sistan and Kain; General Officer Commanding, 4th (Quetta) Division; and the Commandant, Sistan Levy Corps. The volume includes a divider which gives the subject number, the year the subject file was opened, the subject heading, and a list of correspondence references by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.
