- Scope & Content:
-
This file contains letters relating to the presence of Max Thornburg in Bahrain during 1946, and his plans to settle on the Island of Um-as-Sabban. The papers are speculative exchanges between various the British Political Resident in the Persian Gulf and the Government of India on the nature of Thornburg's intentions in Bahrain. The letters discuss his possible relations with various oil companies, and research relating to American commercial interests in Turkey. The papers convey British anxieties about increasing American presence in the Gulf, particularly with regards to American penetration of the British dominated Oil business at the time.
Some of the papers discuss the Ruler of Bahrain's gift of the island of Um-as-Sabban [part of the Bahrain Archipelago] to Thornburg, and the latter's intentions to build a house there as a permanent residence, and base from which to conduct business across the wider region.
