- Title:
- Coll 1/31 'Aden Education: proposed appointment of an Education Officer'
- Scope & Content:
-
The file contains papers regarding the proposed appointment of an Education Officer at Aden, and the establishment of a college for the education of sons and relatives of Aden Protectorate 'chiefs'. It comprises correspondence between the following: the Aden Resident and later Chief Commissioner (Sir Bernard Reilly); the Government of India Departments of Education, and Health and Lands; the High Commissioner for India; the Colonial Office; the India Office Political Department; and the Treasury.
The correspondence includes discussion of Sir Stewart Symes's original proposal for an educational facility, the difficulties in recruiting qualified teaching staff in the Gulf, and arrangements for candidate selection. The bulk of the correspondence concerns a disagreement between the Government of India and the Aden Resident over the candidate selected to be Education Officer and to oversee the accommodation of the students. Confidential reports of the Selection Committee, in addition to references for the successful candidate, are enclosed with the correspondence.
At the front of the file (folios 3-4) are copies of political intelligence summary reports, which include remarks on the eventual opening of the Aden Protectorate College, and the appointment of a headmaster from Zanzibar.
The file includes a divider which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the end of the correspondence (folio 1).
