This volume is a continuation of IOR/L/PS/12/2872, and contains papers regarding the Assyrian Crisis in Iraq during 1933. It consists of correspondence between HM Ambassador to Iraq (Sir Francis Humphrys), HM Chargé d’Affaires to Iraq (George Ogilvie-Forbes), and the Foreign Office, as well as copies of reports and minutes of the League of Nations Committee for the Settlement of the Assyrians of Iraq.
The papers document the following: investigations into the killing of Assyrians and the destruction of property at Mosul, Dohuk and Simele; the deportation of the family of Eshai Mar Shimun XXIII by the Government of Iraq; the exile of the Mar Shimun to Cyprus; the work of the Assyrian Resettlement Committee and Refugee Relief Committee in Iraq; and negotiations at the League of Nations regarding resettlement of Assyrians, including proposals to resettle the community in Cyprus, Brazil or Ecuador.
The volume includes:
- Copy of the Royal Government of 'Iraq, Correspondence relating to Assyrian Settlement from 13th July, 1932, to 5th August, 1933. Part I. Introductory Narrative. Part II. Correspondence., (Baghdad: Government Press; 1933), ff 69-103.
- Documents authored and circulated by the League of Nations Committee for the Settlement of Assyrians in Iraq, including records of the third, fourth and fifth meetings of the Council Committee, ff 38-44.
- Copies of petitions submitted by the Mar Shimun, including eyewitness testimonies to the events at Simele, ff 127-137, 207-224, and 483.
The volume includes dividers giving correspondence references contained in the volume by year. These are placed at the end of the correspondence (folios 1-2).
