- Scope & Content:
-
This file contains correspondence between British officials concerning a state visit to Britain made by the Ruler of Bahrain, Shaikh Hamad bin 'Isa al-Khalifa, in June 1936. The correspondence discusses the logistics of the visit in detail, including the journey there and back from Bahrain (via Istanbul and Baghdad), and Hamad's itinerary once in Britain, that included an audience with King Edward VIII. A detailed itinerary of his trip is contained on folios 88-96.
The correspondence in the file is primarily between officials at the India Office, the Political Agency in Bahrain, the Government Hospitality Fund, the Foreign and Political Department of the Government of India, the Foreign Office, and Charles Belgrave, Hamad's adviser.
In addition to correspondence, the file contains a large selection of press cuttings related to Hamad's visit from both national and local newspapers in Britain including The Times, the Daily Express, The Morning Post, the Daily Herald and The Daily Telegraph.
The file also contains later correspondence from 1947-48 concerning a proposed visit to Britain and the United States of America by Hamad.
The file includes a divider, which gives a list of correspondence references contained in the file by year. This is placed at the back of the correspondence.
