- Title:
- Coll 37/105 'Travellers. Muscat: entomological and botanical expedition. Dr H. Scott and Mr E. B. Britton.'
- Scope & Content:
-
The papers in the file relate to the topic of travellers in the Arabian Peninsula. Although the file's title specifies travellers to Muscat (Dr Hugh Scott and Mr Everard Baldwin Britton) the file only has one folio (folio 3) relating to these two individuals who were undertaking an entomological and botanical expedition for the British Museum (Natural History). Rather the file is mainly concerned with issues concerning the visits of American employees of oil companies (including the Kuwait Oil Company, Petroleum Concessions Limited, and Indian Oil Concessions) to Bahrain, Qatr [Qatar], the Trucial Coast [United Arab Emirates] or Muscat and the processing of their visas.
The file contains telegrams, minute papers, audit notes, typed and handwritten letters from HM Government and letters on headed paper from various oil companies as well as individual passport applications. The correspondence records that the British India Office stipulated that non-British employees of these companies could only be allowed into Qatr, the Trucial Coast and Muscat in exceptional circumstances (folio 99).
The principal correspondents are as follows: Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; India Office; Passport Office; Kuwait Oil Company; Iraq Petroleum Company; Petroleum Concessions Limited; and Indian Oil Concessions Limited.
