- This file contains correspondence on various aspects of the British Government's 'publicity' or propaganda policies in the Persian Gulf region from 8 May 1939 to 3 December 1948. The primary correspondents are as follows: the Secretary of State for India; the Political Resident in the Persian Gulf; the External Affairs and Commonwealth Relations Department of the Government of India; the India Office; the Public Relations Officer in the Persian Gulf; the Ministry of Information; and the Commonwealth Relations Office. The correspondence covers different aspects of propaganda in the region and includes the following:
- The subscription of the Public Information Officer in Bahrain, Major A L A Dredge, to the Palestinian magazine Al Muntada
- The transfer of responsibility for publicity in the Persian Gulf from the Public Relations Office in Bahrain to the Information Policy Department of the Foreign Office
- The payment from the Commonwealth Relations Office to the Ministry of Transport and acceptance of liability for the passage of Bertram Thomas from Basra to Bahrain and back again
- The possibility of the Foreign Office assuming administration of the Public Relations Office in the Persian Gulf jointly with the governments of India and Pakistan
- The transfer of the Public Relations Officer in the Persian Gulf from the Ministry of Information to the Department of Information at the India Office and the Government of India
- The departure of the Director of the Public Relations Bureau in Bahrain, Bertram Thomas, to take up his post as head of the projected new Arab Centre and the search for his replacement
- The proposal for the formation of an Arab Centre in order to 'provide a body of young men with a knowledge of Arabic and Arab countries and of the problems which face His Majesty's Government in the Middle East' and its approval by the Treasury and Foreign Office
- The departure of Bertram Thomas for Alkhobar [Al Khobar], Riyadh, and Jedda [Jeddah] in Saudi Arabia, his meeting with Ibn Saud [‘Abd al-Azīz bin ‘Abd al-Raḥman Āl Sa‘ūd, King of Saudi Arabia] and the presentation of Thomas with a 'golden dagger and silver sword' at his audience with Ibn Saud
- The proposal of the Ministry of Information for Lieutenant-Colonel Bertram Thomas to be appointed to the post of Publicity Officer in the Persian Gulf at Bahrein [Bahrain]
- The offer made by the War Office to Bertram Thomas of a post with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in Iraq, and the subsequent withdrawal of the offer by the 'military authorities in India' and Sir Kinahan Cornwallis
- The departure of Mahatma Gandhi from Rajkot for Bombay [Mumbai], and his intention to travel to the North-West Frontier Province to 'stay there for some time'
- The creation of the post of Publicity Officer for the Persian Gulf and the appointment, service and replacement of Captain R D Metcalfe of the Indian Political Service
- The work done by Professor Laurence Frederic Rushbrook Williams at the Colonial Office in studying anti-British propaganda in regard to Palestine and preparing 'antidote' material and his subsequent employment at the Ministry of Information.
