Despite its title on the front cover, the concerns celebrations of Indian Independence in Bahrain.
The file notably contains a letter from the Persian Gulf Residency, Bahrain, to HM Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs reporting that on 26 January 1950 the Indian community at Bahrain celebrated the inauguration of the Republic of India by the flying of Indian flags between a British flag and the Bahraini flag. Furthermore, there was a reception at the Pearl Cinema attended by HH Sheikh Salman [Shaikh Salmān bin Ḥamad Āl Khalīfah], Ruler of Bahrain, Political Agent at Bahrain Cornelius James Pelly, and Mr and Mrs Allen Lancelot Austin Dredge of the Persian Gulf Residency. At the reception a speech was made by Mr Khakoomal Vallabdas, President of the Celebrations Committee of the Inauguration of the Day of the Republic. Included is a copy of a speech made by Dredge, on behalf of the absent Political Resident in the Persian Gulf, in response to Vallabdas’s presidential address.
