'TRIBES OF THE TIGRIS'
- Scope & Content:
-
An official publication entitled Tribes of the Tigris, compiled by the Basrah [Basra] Branch of the Arab Bureau, Cairo Intelligence Department.
The publication is divided into sections covering the Al Azairij [Āl Azayrij], Ālbu Darraj [al-Bū Darrāj], Bait Haddād [Bayt al-Ḥaddād], Ālbu Muhammad [al-Bū Muḥammad], Al Fartūs, Al Sawā’ad [al-Suwā‘id], and Al Sūdān tribes.
Each section contains: notes on the lineage of the tribe; geographical and economic notes on the area inhabited by the tribe; historical notes; and notes on the tribe’s leaders, strength, and attitude towards the British occupation forces in Iraq or Ottoman authorities.
For some tribes, this is followed by genealogical charts and tables listing the sections of the tribe, along with the name of the headman and the strength of each section. Under Albu Muhammad, there is also a table displaying farms, their current and previous lessees, and the reasons for the removal of previous lessees.
The publication was printed in Calcutta [Kolkata] in 1917 and is marked ‘SUPERINTENDENT GOVERNMENT PRINTING INDIA’.
