The volume is entitled ‘PERSONALITIES IN PERSIA, 1930.’ It is a British intelligence report, compiled around 1930 by General Staff, India on prominent individuals in Persia [Iran] at that time. The report was printed in Simla [Shimla] and is marked ‘SIMLA GOVERNMENT OF INDIA PRESS 1930’. A note on Persian names and personalities is included at the start of the report (folios 9-11).
The information included about each individual varies in length and detail, but can include:
- Current location
- Political and religious beliefs
- Interactions with European military and wartime administration, including the Russian and British
- Ethnicity and tribal affiliations
- Age, appearance, and personality
- Education and employment
- European languages spoken
- Family, friends, and enemies
- Military connections
- Level of influence (current and historic)
- Periods of arrest or imprisonment
- Wealth
- Sentiments towards the British.
Entries often include either favourable assessments or derogatory comments on character, capabilities and physical appearance. A handwritten annotation has been added to folio 101 to update the entry for Shaibani Habibullah Khan Amir Lashkar [Ḥabīb Allāh Khān Shaybānī].
