This file consists of a report, printed by the Committee of Imperial Defence in October 1908, concerning historical events affecting Britain's position in the Persian Gulf between 1907 and 1928. The front cover is marked 'Confidential'. There is a table of contents on folios 3-4. The first section (folios 5-21) appears to be authored by W J Childs of the Foreign Office on 12 October 1928 and is divided into parts and chapters as follows:
- Part 1: Period before the War (1907-14): Chapter 1: The Ottoman Empire (1907-14); Chapter 2: Persia (1907-14); Chapter 3: Arabia (Nejd [Najd], 1891-1914);
- Part 2: Period of the War (1914-19): Chapter 4: The Ottoman Empire (1914-19); Chapter 5: Persia (1914-19); Chapter 6: Arabia (Nejd, 1914-19);
- Part 3: Post-War Period (1918-1928): Chapter 7: Iraq (1918-28); Chapter 8: Persia (1918-1928); Chapter 9: Arabia (1918-1928); Chapter 10: Mohammerah [Muḥammarah] (1910-1928).
These parts and chapters are followed by a section (folios 39-84) that is arranged roughly according to geographic area and subject: Political Control in the Gulf; Muscat, 1908-1928; Bahrein [Bahrain], 1908-1928; Koweit [Kuwait], 1908-1928; The Trucial Chiefs, 1908-1928; El Katr [Qatar], 1908-1928; Tamb [Ṭanb], Little Tamb, Abu Musa [Abū Mūsá] and Sirri [Sīrrī]; Status of certain Groups of Islands in the Gulf; Henjam [Henjām]; Basidu [Basidū]; British Consular Representation in El Hasa [al-Aḥsā]’ and Katr; Wireless Station in the Gulf; Air Communication in the Gulf; Slavery in the Persian Gulf; Lighting and Buoying, 1908-1928; Quarantine Control in the Persian Gulf; Arms Traffic; Persian Complaints of Smuggling; Oil Interests in the Gulf; Trade in the Gulf; and Persian Gulf Trade. There is also an appendix entitled 'Precis of Treaties and Engagements between His Majesty's Government and Rulers of the Arab Coast and Persian Gulf' (folios 85-87). These sections appear to be based on information communicated by the India Office and references to appear in the right and left hand margins.
The tables of contents refers to two maps of 'Persia and Afghanistan' and 'The Persian Gulf and Islands) which are no longer present in the file.
