A 1918 reprint of Volume II of a series of official publications entitled Gazetteer of Persia [Iran], produced by the General Staff, India.

This volume covers an area in central and northwest Persia, bounded by the Turkish [Ottoman] border as far south as Khaniqin [Khanaqin], the Soviet border on the Araxes [Aras] river, the Caspian Sea as far east as Barfarush [Babol], and Yazd.

The Gazetteer consists of an alphabetical list of entries on human settlements (towns, villages, provinces, and districts) and constructions; tribes; and physical features (rivers, streams, valleys, mountains, and passes). Some entries include information on history, geography, climate, local populations, resources, communications, trade, and agriculture.

Sources are displayed in brackets at the end of each entry. A full list of sources is displayed at the front of the volume, entitled ‘List of Authorities’.

At the rear of the volume is a glossary of Farsi, Turkish, Arabic, Gilak, Kurdish, Mazandarani, Baluchi, and other terms that appear in the Gazetteer.

The volume was printed in Simla [Shimla] and is marked ‘PRINTED AT THE GOVERNMENT MONOTYPE PRESS. 1918.’ A 1914 edition of this volume is catalogued as IOR/L/MIL/17/15/3/1.

The map which originally accompanied the volume is not present. Copies of this map can be found with other editions of the Gazetteer of Persia, for example catalogued as IOR/L/MIL/17/15/2/1, f 397.
