Topics of correspondence include requests for patronage and recommendation; the financial situation in India (see John Milne's letters); Charles Grant's recommendation for Mountstuart Elphinstone for the Order of Bank, which Elphinstone turns down (Mss Eur F88/91/8 and Mss Eur F88/91/9); the Elphinstone Professorships and the education of Indian natives in general (Mss Eur F88/91/26, Mss Eur F88/91/47 and Mss Eur F88/91/49); and correspondence with William Erskine regarding his work on the life of Robert Clive with the help of Sir John Malcolm's manuscript (Mss Eur F88/91/15 and Mss Eur F88/91/28).
