Mountstuart Elphinstone had asked his nephew Lord Elphinstone to commission a new dressing box for Mrs Catalina Paulina Elphinstone Fleeming after she had lost hers while visiting him (for example Mss Eur F88/139/6). He also received a letter of thanks from Charles MacFarlane, to whom he had given a cheque for £50 after hearing about his difficulties (Mss Eur F88/139/17).
