- Comprises several bundles: 1) No 4 Bombay 1823. Adam and James's separate private letters - with a draft letter of resignation from Mountstuart Elphinstone to the Court of Directors (later withdrawn), private correspondence from John Adam and James Ruthven Elphinstone and draft letters by Mountstuart Elphinstone, Mar 1823-Mar 1826. Also has a list of contents for the file; 2) No 5 Confidential letters and memorandum for Sir John Malcolm on the character of public servants. Also includes confidential papers passed onto Elphinstone after his departure from India by RE Burrowes regarding John Adam, Dr Jeffery's bills and arrangements made to get Mr Tallemache out of jail, 1823-1827; 3) No 6 Drafts of private letters by Mountstuart Elphinstone, 1825-1827; 4) No 7 Notes on the invasion of India by the Russians, with a proemium of the poem on the Russian Campaign of 1812, c 1834; 5) No 8 Old and new notes about Bactria and Alexander's Marches, 1814-1835; 6) No 9 Abstracts, memos, drafts chiefly made at Bombay - with an extract from a journal of a voyage to Copieu to Lady Charlotte Malcolm, verses on Carlos, lists of names, a rough calendar of sorts with appointments and other notes, 1824 [Also includes No 10 - not found in index but included in this bundle]; 7) No 11 Corrections for the 3rd edition of Caubul [Kabul] with some for the 2nd edition, 1838; 8) No 12 Vocabularies - with a vocabulary list for English, Persian and Koordi [Kurdi] and samples of native dialects (these items are awaiting further investigation to determine their exact language); 9) No 13 Praises of the Deccan from Morris' Griffith, verses and extracts out of newspapers; 10) No 14 Some of the notes sent to Captain Burnes about July 1834. This file contain several large folded sheets (folios 423-426). Folios 433-442 are delicate - please handle with care
