The volume contains a chronological list of brief summaries of papers relating to the activities of the Indian Expeditionary Force D (also known as the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force) between 16 and 31 July 1916. This is accompanied by appendices containing copies and extracts of these papers, which include letters, memoranda, telegrams, and appreciations [reports] from the Directorate of Military Operations.
A summary of the contents of this volume can be found at the start of IOR/L/MIL/17/5/3256. The volume mostly relates to:
- Supplies and equipment for Force D, including weapons, ammunition, lorries, and medical stores
- Turkish [Ottoman] forces: details of movements, strengths, distribution, reinforcements, and casualties
- Plans for the expansion of hospital facilities for Force D
- River craft: details of craft available, efforts to procure more, and the organisation of the work for the re-erection of craft on arrival in Mesopotamia. Included is a copy of a report by Major F H Smith regarding Nile steamers sent to Basrah [Basra] (ff 115-125)
- Reinforcements for Force D, including details of sailings and troop transports, and lists of officers and appointments
- Russian forces in Persia [Iran] and the Caucasus: details of strengths, distribution, reinforcements, and operations
- Plans for a prisoner exchange, including a list of proposed prisoners for exchange (f 110)
- Reports from the Tigris and Euphrates lines, and plans for an advance towards Baghdad
- Plans for railway construction
- Relations with the Kurdish population and with various tribes in Persia
- Discussions concerning the organisation of operations in Mesopotamia.
The volume also includes:
- Distribution of Force D for 16 July (ff 11-13)
- Statement of guns and ammunition in Mesopotamia (f 90)
- Returns of the sick and wounded for 10 June (f 87), 24 June (f 134), and 8 July (f 145).
The vast majority of material in the volume dates from July 1916, but there is also a small amount of material which dates from May and June 1916.
