The volume contains a chronological list of brief summaries of papers relating to the activities of the Indian Expeditionary Force D (also known as the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force) between 1 and 15 September 1916. This is accompanied by appendices containing copies and extracts of these papers, which include: letters, telegrams, notes, reports, tables, and memoranda.
A summary of the contents of this volume can be found at folios 3-6 and the volume concerns:
- Appreciations [reports] and intelligence summaries from the Directorate of Military Operations
- ‘Report of Major General G[eorge] F[letcher] MacMunn’s Committee on the Organisation of the River Service in Mesopotamia’ on folios 14-25
- ‘Report on the Physical and Climatic Difficulties of the Mesopotamian Theatre of War by Major W[illiam] F[rederick] Blaker’ on folios 31-36
- Lists of Turkish [Ottoman] officials to be exchanged for British prisoners of war, and lists of the British prisoners handed over
- Views on the conduct of future operations in Mesopotamia and the situation in south-west Persia
- Japanese ships and intentions in the Gulf
- Railway progress and construction policy
- The re-organisation of Force D
- The organisation of camel corps and the purchase of camels
- The provision of river craft and other military supplies
- Labour requirements, including a proposal to send Chinese labourers to Mesopotamia
- The location of Russian and Turkish troops
- The health of Force D
- Recommendations for the Distinguished Service Cross to be awarded to thirteen officers of the Royal Indian Marine and for the Serbian Decoration to be awarded to members of Force D
- Difficulties of using and maintaining horses with Force D
- Financial assistance to the Sheikh [Shaikh] of Mohammerah [Khorramshahr].
