Chapters 17-25 of a typescript heavily-revised in blue ink.
The individual sheets (many of which include autograph material on the verso) are ordered and numbered on the recto by the author as follows:
- Chapter 17: 153-73.
- Chapter 18: 173-8, 178A, 178B, 179-94.
- NB The concluding paragraph of chapter 18 as published (beginning 'During this last period with Vaughan') is on 187. There is no designated chapter 19 in this draft, although there is a side-heading 'Chap 19' at the top of 204.
- Chapter 20 (corresponds to published chapter 19): 194-202.
- Chapter 21 (corresponds to published chapter 20): 203-24, 224 (repeated numbering), 225-8, 230 (originally numbered in typescript as 229 but re-numbered in blue ink as 230).
- NB The conclusion of chapter 20 as published is on 224 (on the second sheet with this number).
