This volume contains the Proceedings of the Political branch of the Foreign Department of the Government of India for the months of July to September 1868. These Proceedings comprise copies of correspondence of the Government of India Foreign Department (renamed Foreign and Political Department in 1914).
The subjects covered include:
- Affairs in and around the Aden Settlement
- Intelligence received from Afghanistan and Central Asia, including the overthrow of Ameer Mohammad Azam Khan [Amīr Muḥammad A‘ẓam Khān] by his brother Shere Ali Khan [Shīr ‘Alī Khān]
- Affairs in Burmah [Burma/Myanmar], including the progress made by a British expedition from Bhamo to China
- Affairs in East Africa, including the conclusion of the British Abyssinia Expedition and intelligence regarding the bombardment of Mohilla [Mohéli] by the Second French Empire
- Affairs in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman
- Affairs in Nipal [Nepal], Tibet, and Bhootan [Bhutan]
- Affairs in Persia [Iran], including the re-leasing of the port of Bunder Abbas [Bandar-e ʻAbbas] to the Sultan of Muscat by the Persian Government
- Affairs in the Persian Gulf, including steps taken by the British Political Resident to prevent further violations of maritime peace following an attack on Guttur [Qatar] by the rulers of Bahrein [Bahrain] and Aboothabee [Abu Dhabi]

- Political, administrative, judicial, economic and military affairs in India
- Affairs relating to Indian Princely States, including disputes and conflicts between rulers of Princely States, succession to the rulership of Princely States, and efforts by British military officials to capture or kill 'outlaws'

- Frontier affairs, including military operations on the North-West Frontier
- Appointments of foreign Consuls and Acting Consuls in India and Burmah
