Scope & Content:

This volume contains the Proceedings of the Political branch of the Foreign Department of the Government of India for the months of January-May 1870. These Proceedings comprise copies of correspondence of the Government of India Foreign Department (renamed Foreign and Political Department in 1914).

The subjects covered include:

  • Affairs in and around the Aden Settlement, in particular French activity in the region
  • Intelligence received from Afghanistan and Central Asia
  • Affairs in Burmah [Burma or Myanmar]
  • Affairs in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman
  • Affairs in Thibet [Tibet] and Bootan [Bhutan]
  • Affairs in Persia [Iran], including the capture of Bunder Abbass [Bandar-e ‘Abbas] by the Sultan of Muscat
  • Affairs in the Persian Gulf
  • Affairs in Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq]
  • Affairs in the Sultanate of Zanzibar
  • Political, administrative, judicial, economic and military affairs in India
  • Affairs relating to Indian Princely States, including succession, debts and internal disputes
  • Issues concerning dispossessed former rulers of Indian states and their families, including pensions, inheritance, debts and land
  • Matters relating to senior and influential persons in India, including positions, titles, hereditary rights, allowances, pensions and petitions
  • Frontier affairs
  • Appointments, pay and allowances of British military and civilian personnel
  • Appointments of foreign Consuls and Acting Consuls in India and Burmah
  • The activities of rival colonial powers
  • Tours and expeditions.
A small amount of correspondence in French and German is present in the volume.
