This volume contains the Proceedings of the Political branch of the Foreign Department of the Government of India for the months of July -September 1871. The Proceedings comprise copies of correspondence of the Government of India Foreign Department.
The subjects covered include:
- Affairs in and around Aden including: proposed establishment of a depot for liberated slaves [enslaved people] near Secotra [Socotra]; importation of African enslaved people into India from the Hedjaz (Hejaz]
- Affairs in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman including: movements of Syud Toorkeh [Sayyid Turkī bin Sa‘īd Āl Bū Sa‘īd] for Burkeh [Barka]; submission of Gwadur [Gwadar]; disturbances in Batinah; journey of Shaikh Zaeed bin Khaleefa [Shaykh Zāyid bin Khalīfa Āl Nahyān] and some Wahabees [Wahhābī forces] to Beraymee [Al Buraimi]; complaint by the Government of Muscat against the Ottoman Consul at Bombay [Mumbai] for interfering with vessels coming from the Oman and Muscat coasts to Bombay; recognition of Syud Toorkeh
- Affairs in the Sultanate of Zanzibar including: copy of a letter from the Acting Political Agent and HM Consul in Zanzibar, reporting his having adjudicated in two cases of vessels seized by HMS Colombine as being engaged in the trade in enslaved people, involving the use of the French flag as cover
- Affairs in Baghdad including: a report by Midhut Pasha [Midḥat Pāshā] of an alleged attack by Hoosein Kooli Khan [Ḥusayn Qulī Khān], Persian Governor of Luristan, on the tribe of Aboo Hamid [Abū Ḥamīd] of Toursak near Mendeli
- Affairs in Persia [Iran] including: Persian movements on Chaga [Chagā] and Seistan [Sistān] boundary; restrictions on Christians and Jews in Persia
- Affairs in the Persian Gulf: a treaty for the suppression of the slave trade with Bahrein [Bahrain]; the case of the British Steam Ship Nada and claims of part ownership by Persian subjects at Bushire [Bushehr] and the associated etiquette of gun salutes; consular jurisdiction in Persia and the Persian Gulf; movements of the Magpie, Lynx and Bullfinch in the Persian Gulf.
The Proceedings also cover tribal relations, trade monopolies and succession to property in India.
