This volume contains the Proceedings of the Foreign Department of the Government of India for the months of January-June 1887. These Proceedings comprise copies of correspondence of the Government of India Foreign Department (renamed Foreign and Political Department in 1914).
The subjects covered include:
- Affairs in and around the Aden Protectorate, including relations with tribes and polities around Aden. A ‘Revised Orthography of Names of Tribes, Towns, Rivers, &c., around Aden’ is on folios 63-93
- Incidents in Burma [Myanmar] involving non-British European nationals
- Affairs in East Africa, particularly the Somali Coast and Zanzibar
- Political, administrative, judicial, economic and military affairs in India, particularly Assam and Baluchistan
- Affairs relating to Indian Princely States, particularly Manipur
- Affairs in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman
- Affairs in Nipal [Nepal], particularly related to extradition and boundary cases
- Affairs in Persia [Iran]. A ‘Report on the horse and mule-breeding industries in Persia’ is on folios 522-29
- Affairs in the Persian Gulf, including Bahrein and Katr [Qatar], and particularly in relation to the suppression of the trade in enslaved people
- Affairs in Siam [Thailand], particularly in relation to the new British Vice-Consulate at Chiengmai [Chiang Mai]. A plan for the new Vice-Consulate building is on folio 126
- Affairs in Turkish Arabia [Ottoman Iraq]
- Incidents related to pilgrims travelling through Aden, Hodeida [Al Hudaydah] and Jedda [Jeddah]
- Copies of British treaties with Guatemala, Roumania [Romania] and Russia.
There is a map of the ‘New Djaila Canal’ on folio 40, which has been catalogued as IOR/P/3035, f 40.
Small amounts of correspondence in French and Spanish are present in the volume.
Tabular Statements of matters of routine for each month – also known as ‘B’ proceedings – are included at the end of each month’s Proceedings. These summarise documents that were not considered important enough by the Foreign Department to be sent to London.
