- These are non-contributory pensions awarded to widows and orphans of officers and warrant officers of the Indian Army, and of chaplains, under conditions very similar to these applicable to personnel of the British Army under Sections VII and XII of the Royal Warrant for the Pay, appointment, promotion and non-effective pay of the Army. Eligibility is limited to the families of those who entered the India Services after 1881, and who fulfilled certain conditions of length of service, etc. Until recently the possession of private income in excess of certain amounts was an absolute barrier to admission. Awards were first made from Indian Revenues from Apr 1886. Records of payments of these pensions will usually be found in the volumes of the Indian Military Service Family Pension Fund Pensions [L/AG/21/35] for the same period, unless the person were in receipt of a second pension from another Fund, eg the Indian Military Widows' and Orphans' Fund [L/AG/21/36] or the Madras Military [L/AG/21/30] or Medical Funds [L/AG/21/29], in which event payment was made on the book pertaining to that fund.
