Autograph manuscript with semi-autobiographical story about an artist named Johnny Butterfield. Consists of draft of chapter 1 and beginning of chapter 2, followed by notes for development of the story. The notes refer to real people, places and events in Peake's life. There are two illustrations in ink of Johnny Butterfield: in a train carriage; and carrying an artist's portfolio. On inside back cover there is a list of potential titles apparently for Mr Pye and Titus Alone. Inscribed 'Smarden: Kent'. Undated.
Also includes:
- two loose leaves with revised autograph draft of beginning of short story entitled 'The Story of the Gray Horse';
- loose leaf with list of ideas for short stories.
