- Title:
- 'The Dusky Birron' by Gordon Smith
- Scope & Content:
-
Clean copy typescript of a story written by Peake's former school friend with 'pictures by Mervyn Peake' (although there are no illustrations with this typescript). The character of the Dusky Birron was invented by Smith and Peake for an earlier collaboration, 'The Moccus Book'. Peake's Wallington address is inscribed on the first leaf of the typescript, suggesting that it probably dates from 1929-1930: see G Peter Winnington, Mervyn Peake's Vast Alchemies (London: Peter Owen, 2009), pp.61-64. Brown paper cover is inscribed '49 Portsdown Road W9', suggesting that it dates from 1938-1939: see Maeve Gilmore, 'A World Away' in Mervyn Peake: Two Lives (London: Vintage, 1999), p.22, p.29.
