- Title:
- Letter of Godfrey, archdeacon of Worcester, addressed to 'Pope A.', certifying the authenticity of a charter of King Edgar of England (r. 959–975)
- Scope & Content:
-
Letter of Godfrey, archdeacon of Worcester, addressed to 'Pope A', certifying the authenticity of a charter of King Edgar of England (r. 959–975), which grants privileges and the restoration of land to Pershore Abbey. Godfrey's confirmation of the document's authenticity is based on its three seals, belonging to King Edgar, St Dunstan, Archbishop of Canterbury (b. 909, d. 988), and Ælfhere, Earl of Mercia (d. 983).
Godfrey was archdeacon of Worcester 1144–1156 x 7 and c. 1158 x 9–1167 x 8. There were three popes in succession who had the initial 'A' during this time: Anastasius IV (reg. 1153–1154), Adrian IV (reg. 1154–9), and Alexander III (reg. 1159–81). The charter of King Edgar described in the letter has been identified as Cotton MS Augustus II 6 (Stokes, 'King Edgar's Charter for Pershore' (2008), pp. 76-78).
The dorse of the letter features an inscription in a 16th-century hand.
