Charter of Ceolwulf, granting to Eanmund land at Canterbury; dated 888, probably for 867 (Sawyer, no. 1204).
Endorsed in the same hand as the main text, ‘+ Ciolulf sealde eanmunde his mege ðisne tuun betƿix eum ƿið .cxx. in ęc ęrbe ęðeredes cyninges friols ⁊ his handseten ⁊ sęlen’; in a 9th- or 10th-century hand, ‘+ Æðeleræ gebohte et cialulfe ða strętę siððan hæ ðis land hæfde ðæ hær be æften stent ·vii·fan. fęt an bræde ðe to ðissum lande belimpeð suð innan ðet land an ðara ƿistræte an lucænan geƿitnesse. ⁊ hyldefriðes ⁊ an cuðulfęs. ⁊ an hymman ⁊ an eadulfes. ⁊ an biarhthlafæs·· ⁊ ðer ne gebyreð an ðam landę an folcæs folcryht to lefænnæ rumæs butan tƿigen fyt to yfæs drypæ.’; and in a 12th-century hand, ‘.latine.’

Provenance:
Benedictine cathedral priory of Holy Trinity or Christ Church, Canterbury, Kent.
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
