Diploma of King William I of England (r. 1066–1087) to Abbot Baldwin (d. c. 1097) and the monks of Bury St Edmund's, confirming the exemption of the church and the vill of St Edmund from the jurisdiction of Bishop Herfast of Thetford (d. 1084) and his successors; the case having been heard and settled by the King with the counsel of his archbishops, bishops, earls, and other knights. A bilingual charter written in Latin, with an Old English translation. Dated 31 May 1081. Spurious.
Witnessed by King William I; Queen Matilda; Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury; Thomas, Archbishop of York; Odo, Bishop of Bayeux and many others.
Endorsed in a 12th-century hand, 'PRIVILEGIVM SANCTI EADMVNDI' (a 14th-century hand has inserted 'Abbathie'); in a 14th-century hand, 'd. e. Beri'; in a 14th-century hand, 'Item quando monachi ibi fuerunt primo introducti'.

Benedictine abbey of St Edmund, King and Martyr, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
