Hodilredus (Æthelred or Œthelred), kinsman of King Sebbi of the East Saxons, grants 40 hides (manentes) at Ricingahaam, Budinhaam, Dagenham, Angenlabeshaam and Widmundes felt (Wyfields in Great Ilford), all probably in Essex, to Hedilburg (Æthelburg), abbess, for her minster called Beddanhaam (Barking); March 685 × 693, probably 686 × 688 (Sawyer, no. 1171).
The original charter breaks off mid-clause; the bounds, blessing and witness-list were added in the second half of the 8th century.
Endorsed in a contemporary hand, ‘de terram quam donauit odilredus:·’, an 11th-century hand adding ‘·xl· manentium +’; in a mid 10th-century hand, ‘ðis is seo boc to bercingon’; in a 12th- or 13th-century hand: ‘Carta hodured regis’; in an early 14th-century hand, ‘pro Stebbenh’. Exhibitum apud berkinge coram I. de colet’ iiii non’ marcii anno domini ·mᵒ·cccviᵗᵒ·’; in the early 16th-century hand of John Joscelyn, ‘Erkenwald fuit Aº 675’; further illegible endorsements.

Abbey of St Mary the Virgin and St Æthelburh, of Benedictine nuns, Barking, Essex.
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
