King Æthelstan grants privileges to the bishopric of Crediton in return for 60 pounds of silver; dated 933 (Sawyer, no. 421).
Endorsed in a contemporary hand, ‘Libertas totius Cridiensis æclesiæ episcopatus.’; in a 13th-century hand, ‘Libertas totius cridianensis episcopatus concessa eaddulfo episcopo ab adelstano rege pro sexaginta libris pecunie. Anno domini dcccc. \nongentesimo/ tri[cesimo tercio]’; in an early 14th-century hand, ‘Carta Adelstani Regis ecclesie Creditonensi Anno domini Nongentesimo tricesimo tercio. Bene conseruetur. quia fide digna in perpetuum.’; and in a hand of 1608, ‘Ista carta concessa fuit ante conquestum cxxxiii. Antiquitas eius dclxxv. ad hunc annum mdcviii.’

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
