King William I of England (r. 1066–1087) confirms to Hugh d'Orevalle (d. 1084/5), Bishop of London, Geoffrey de Mandeville (d. c. 1100) the sheriff [of Middlesex], and all the sheriffs [of Middlesex] that come after him, the privileges of the Abbey of St Peter, Westminster, and the freedom of all merchants lodging on the abbey's lands. Written by the notary Ingulph. Dated 25 December 1081. Spurious.
Witnessed by King William I; Queen Matilda; Lanfranc, Archbishop of Canterbury; Thomas, Archbishop of York; Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, and many others.
Endorsed in a 13th- or 14th-century hand, 'Rex Willelmi primi' and in another hand, 'Willelmi Regis quarta carta'.

Benedictine abbey of St Peter, Westminster, Middlesex.
Sir Edward Dering, first baronet (b. 1598, d. 1644), antiquary and religious controversialist: his ownership mark on the dorse.
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
