King Coenwulf of the Mercians grants one sulung (aratrum) at Cynincges cua lond near Westwood, Kent, to Archbishop Wulfred of Canterbury, in return for seven pounds of gold and silver: dated 25 November 814, Bearwe (Sawyer, no. 177).
Endorsed in a 9th-century hand, ‘be uuestan ƿuda’ and ‘cyncges cu land’; in a 12th-century hand, ‘Kenulf \rex Merciorum dedit/ uuluredo archiepiscopo terram .i. aratri pro .uii. marcis auri et argent’; in another 12th-century hand or hands, ‘Kenulfus tex dedit Wlfredo archiepiscopo Kingesculand. cum pertinentiis suis de Blen’ and ‘latine.’

Benedictine cathedral priory of Holy Trinity or Christ Church, Canterbury, Kent.
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
