This manuscript contains a variety of texts bound together as follows:
ff. 1-38: Martinus Polonus, Chronicle; musical staves with neums (38v) (4th quarter of the 13th century-2nd half of the 15th century);
ff. 39–106v John Lydgate (?), The Pilgrimage of the Life of Man (2nd quarter of the 15th century);
ff 107–164: Chronicle of English history, from Ascanius to 1327 (2nd half of the 15th century)
ff. 165-167: Prosper of Aquitaine, Epigrammata, fragment (3rd quarter of the 9th century); Prosper of Aquitaine, Versus ad coniugem, fragment (1st half of the 11th century).
25 paper folios containing lists of archbishops, bishops and kings, copied in the1st quarter of the 17th century, formerly bound together with this manuscript, are now kept separately as Cotton MS Tiberius A VII/2.

Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician, his inscription at the top of f. 167, in the catalogues of his library, Harley MS 6018, no. 353 and Additional MS 36789, f. 148, as cited in Tite, The Early Records (2003), p. 104.
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753. Three texts copied in the 1st quarter of the 17th century, formerly part of the same manuscript, were bound separately in 1866, as Cotton MS Tiberius A vii, part ii, renamed Cotton MS Tiberius A VII/2.
