f. 1r: an early modern table of contents and notes;
f. 2r: a Cottonian frontispiece;
ff. 3r- 86v: the 'D' version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, mostly written in the 11th century with some 16th-century supply leaves;
ff. 87r-v: two writs of King Cnut for 1035;
ff. 88r-90v: John Jocelyn's transcript of extracts from the 'E' version of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.
ff. 91r-218v: Chronicle of Walter Guisborough, copied in the late 14th or early 15th century.

Condition: leaves damaged by fire in 1731.
Materials: Parchment and ink (ff. 1–87, 91–218) and paper and ink (ff. 88–90).
Dimensions: approximately 300 × 215 mm (text block ranges from 265 x 130 to 195 x 130 mm).
Foliation: ff. 218 (+ 3 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning and 3 at the end, where f. 1 is an early modern endleaf, f. 2 is a Cottonian title-page).
Binding: BM/BL in-house, rebound in 1849.

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician: inscribed with his name (f. 91v).
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
