Much of this volume relates to the exile of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542–1567; d. 1587), and including the original correspondence of Mary, Queen of Scots; Elizabeth I, Queen of England; Catherine de Medici, Queen Dowager of France (d. 1589); Sir William Cecil (later 1st Baron Burghley, d. 1598); and Sir Nicholas Throckmorton (d. 1571).
