- OriginLanercost Priory, Cumbria: the manuscript was made at Lanercost, in or around 1346.Provenance:Owned by Lanercost Priory, Cumbria, perhaps until the house was dissolved in 1538.
Owned by John Piers, archbishop of York (b. 1522/3, d. 1594): the name ‘Iohannes Eborac.’ is found on f. 5r.
Owned by Henry Savile of Banke (b. 1568, d. 1617): his printed bookplate (‘Henry Savill … owees thys booke’) is pasted on f.2v.
Owned by Sir Robert Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631): his signature(‘Robertus Cotton Bruceus’) is entered in the lower margin of f. 5r. List ofcontents in the hand of Richard James (d. 1638), Cotton’s librarian, on f. 1r. Listedtwice in the earliest catalogue of the Cotton library, Harley MS 6018, nos. 328,385 (ff. 120r, 135r).
Sir Robert Cotton's library passed in turn to his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), and grandson, Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702).
Bequeathed to the British nation at the death of Sir John Cotton, as confirmed by Act of Parliament, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7, 'for Publick Use and Advantage'.
The Cotton collection formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753. The manuscripts were transferred to the British Library in 1973.
