Dimensions: 450 x 300 mm (text space: 330 x 210 mm, in two columns).
Foliation: ff. 186 (+ 3 unfoliated paper flyleaves at the beginning and at the end); f. 1 is a medieval parchment trimmed off, reinforced by two early modern leaves of the same format (195 x 300 mm).
Script: Protogothic.
Binding: British Museum/British Library in-house. Rebound in 1962.

Origin: ?Tewkesbury. Southwestern England.
Provenance:
The Benedictine abbey of St Mary the Virgin, Tewkesbury: late 12th-century ownership inscription related to the donation of Alan, abbot of the abbey 'De dono domini Alani abbatis', followed by a table of contents written by the same scribe (f. 1v) (see Sharpe and Willoughby, Medieval Libraries (2015)).
Added, 13th-century notes (e. g., ff. .102r, 173r, 125v).
Added, numerous early 14th-century pencil notes (e. g., ff. 3r, 8r, 15r).
Added, late 15th-century signature 'Joh. Harband' (f. 185v).
Sir John Prise (b. 1501/02, d. 1555), administrator and scholar: part of a group of manuscripts given to Jesus College, Oxford, cited as no. 33 in the list entitled 'Nomina librorum manuscriptorum ex donatione Ioannis Prise Equitis Aurati Herefordensis', according to Ker, 'Sir John Prise' (1955); perhaps his tables of contents on a strip of parchment pasted onto f. 3r, the same parchment is found on f. 1r with Gregory Prise's pen trial.
Gregory Prise (b. 1535, d. 1600), eldest son of Sir John Prise and the principal executor of his will: his signature and several pen trials (ff. 1r, 186r), 'Prise esquire one of the Justices of the Pece' (f. 186r).
Jesus College, Oxford (founded in 1571): listed under the heading 'Nomina librorum manuscriptorum ex donatione Ioannis Prise Equitis Aurati Herefordensis' in a register between documents dating to 1621 and 1622 (see Ker, 'Sir John Prise' (1955)).
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician: perhaps acquired through Richard James (see Tite, The Early Records (2003)); pressmark of the Cotton Library (f. 2r); cited in Cotton's catalogues, now Add MS 36789 (f. 138r) and Add MS 36682, according to Tite, The Early Records (2003).
Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton.
John Hough (b. 1651, d. 1743), college head and bishop of Worcester: borrowed by him in the 1690s, according to Tite, The Early Records (2003).
Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
