Script: Late Anglo-Saxon and Anglo-Caroline minuscule; many hands, with both the Insular and Continental forms of ‘g’.

Origin:
Leominster (?). The calendar in Cotton MS Nero A II, f. 7v, includes the unusual feast of St Eadfrith, and he is also invoked in the second litany on f. 93v (Hillaby, ‘Leominster and Hereford’, pp. 6–9; Smith, Use of Hereford, pp. 51–52). It was earlier thought that a Winchester origin was suggested by the recurrence of St Machutus, and a reference to ‘cohors Wentana’ (f. 132v). Some inflexions and annotations suggest that the book was written for use by both men and women (e.g. ff. 108r–109v), possibly at St Mary’s Convent (Nunnaminster). The three columns of the table in this manuscript on f. 2v point to 1034–35, 1029, and 1040, while the computus table in Cotton MS Nero A II, f. 9r, provides information for calculating the church year between 1029 and 1047 (Muir, Pre-Conquest English Prayer-Book, pp. xiv–xvi).
Provenance:
John Joscelyn (b. 1529, d. 1603): a note by him in the calendar is dated 1593 (Cotton Nero MS A II, f. 8r).
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician: owner. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753. Leaves damaged by fire in 1731.
