This parchment leaf originally formed Article 105 of Cotton MS Vitellius B IV, a volume of records and papers concerning England and Rome, dating between 1519 and 1522. It was damaged by fire in 1731 and the remaining fragments were removed and bound separately.
Bull of Pope Leo X (1513–1521) dated 11 October 1521, conferring on King Henry VIII of England (r. 1509–1547) the title Fidei Defensor (Defender of the Faith). The title was awarded in recognition of the king's pamphlet Assertio septem sacramentorum adversus Martinum Lutherum (Declaration of the Seven Sacraments against Martin Luther), condemning the actions of the German theologian Martin Luther (b. 1483, d. 1546).

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
