This manuscript contains a variety of texts bound together, including:
ff. 1, 28, 103: leaves from a Book of Hours, made in France c. 1415-1420;
ff. 2-27: the Libellus Æthelwoldi (copied at Ely in the 2nd quarter of the 12th century);
ff. 29-51: excerpts from the Liber Eliensis, copied in the 1st quarter of the 14th century;
ff. 52-54: fragments of Ely annals, copied in the mid-14th century;
ff. 55-60: Goliardic Poems, copied in the 2nd half of the 13th century;
ff. 61-102: documents relating to Ely, copied in the 1st half of the 15th century;
ff. 104-121: Orderic Vitalis's Historia Ecclesiastica, copied in the 1st quarter of the 15th century.

Foliation: ff. iii + 124 + i, foliated i[–iii], 1–121. Three early modern flyleaves at the beginning and one at the end, unnumbered, as are a leaf after 60 and the final two leaves of quire xx.
Collation: a4+1 (ff. i–iii; 1st pastedown); i1 (f. 1); ii2–1 (f. 2; 1st cancelled, with f. 1 glued to the stub), iii4 (ff. 3–6), iv4–1 (ff. 7–9; 4th cancelled), v8 (ff. 10–17), vi10 (ff. 18–27); vii1 (f. 28); viii12–12+11 (ff. 29–39; folded parchment fragments, with f. 28 glued to the stub of 1st, and a charter cut apart, folded, and glued to the stubs of 2–12), ix12 (ff. 40–51); x2–2+3 (ff. 52–54; a charter cut apart, folded, and glued to a parchment strip); xi14–7 (ff. 55–60b; a series of singletons pasted together into a quire: 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th cancelled); xii10 (ff. 61–70), xiii–xvi8 (ff. 71–102); xvii1 (f. 103, a singleton attached to quire xvi); xviii4 (ff. 104–107), xix–xx8 (ff. 108–121c); b4–2 (f. 121d; 1st and 2nd cancelled, 4th pastedown).

Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b. 1571, d. 1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician. Arms on the cover, table of contents on f. i recto. Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b. 1594, d. 1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b. 1621, d. 1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c. 7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
