ff. 4r–120v: Hymnal with prose paraphrases and continuous gloss in Old English, some with neums. ‘Incipiunt ymni quod notibus atque diebus decantant monachi laudibus assiduis. His animus monachi celestia querere discit. Æternumque melos cogitat His scemodis.’
ff. 120v–124v: Additions to the hymnal in hands of the 11th and 12th centuries, most with neums, with a 13th-century addition on f. 124v.

ff. 125r–155v: Twenty-four monastic canticles with prose paraphrases and continuous gloss in Old English. ‘Incipiunt cantica isaiae prophetę dominicis diebus.’
ff. 155v–156v: Supplementary hymns from the 12th century.
f. 157: Added leaf, a fragment of a Missal including part of an otherwise unknown office of St Nectan, presumably from the Augustinian abbey of St Nectan, Hartland.

Decoration:
New hymns open with a three-line initial, alternating between green, blue, and red, sometimes with penwork decoration in the same or an alternative colour. Glosses are in red.

Origin:
? Christ Church Cathedral, Canterbury: one of the hand resembles the main hand of Cotton Julius A VI, and the manuscripts may have been written in the same scriptorium (Ker, Catalogue (1957), p. 205).
Provenance:
Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (b.1571, d.1631), 1st baronet, antiquary and politician|: his arms on the binding, and tables of contents associated with his library (ff. [1v], 3r). Cotton’s collection was augmented by his son, Sir Thomas Cotton (b.1594, d.1662), 2nd baronet, and his grandson, Sir John Cotton. Sir John Cotton (b.1621, d.1702), 3rd baronet: bequeathed the entire Cotton collection of books and manuscripts to trustees ‘for Publick Use and Advantage’, 12 and 13 William III, c.7. Formed one of the foundation collections of the British Museum in 1753.
